| | | Do high winds make blue tits give up on chicks? We live in a very windy spot, and last Sunday (it has taken a week to get over it), after two days of gale, the parents stopped flying in with food to our bird box. A chick protested in the hole for several hours and I was at a loss what to do. In the end I left it till next morning, but by then the (nearly fledged) two chicks had died. Additionally, I'm pretty sure the blue tits who always pick a spot in the front, gave up at around the same time, and, while it's lovely to think the chicks had fledged and flown, I can't think they chose a force 7 to get their chicks out and about. (But that's a hole that's too hard to investigate.) I wonder if anyone else has observed this, and what, if anything, I should do about it? |

| | | Re: Do high winds make blue tits give up on chicks? I found one dead fledgling blue tit about a week ago after some high winds, there were no marks on it so I would guess either it got too cold or was dashed on the patio.

| | | Re: Do high winds make blue tits give up on chicks? I thought the same thing might have happened to my pair but they have soldiered on through the high winds. Maybe depends how exposed to the wind the nest box is.
