| | | Do blue tits use same nest for 2nd brood? Our blue tits have already successfully fledged, so we are thinking that the parents may have a second brood. Our dilemma is whether to clean out the nest box (so they have to start all over again), or whether to leave it so they can reuse the present nest. My instinct is to clean it out, but I won't if they are happy to reuse it.
Can anyone help?
Thank you. |

Don't interfere with it - It may easily put them off using it. Birds like to feel secure and in a familiar environment. Best to clean out in the non-breeding season of Winter. But don't over clean it - Just brush it out. The best nest boxes have drainage and flip-up roofs for access.

| | | Re: Do blue tits use same nest for 2nd brood? Hi cherry, blue tits very rarely if ever have second broods which is probably why they have large broods. They may try again if the first nest is unsuccessful but that would probably not be in the same nest. |

| | | Re: Do blue tits use same nest for 2nd brood? Best left alone IMO. One year we had a brood of great tits, followed by house sparrows in the same box, followed by around 12 wrens using it as a winter roosting site during the cold weather.
If you want to clean out the box, do it end Feb/early March, before next year's "house hunters" start building. Old nests can save a lot of time and effort for subsequent broods, and offer a nice warm hideaway for the winter. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
