This year 2011 is proving to be different, especially in our garden in what was Westmorland.
I have already mentioned that we are well accustomed to the April/May antics of Magpies and Jays in robbing the Blackbirds & Collared Doves of their eggs and chicks.
However, this year, with the recent explosion in Woodpigeon, we are seeing small gangs (up to four) of ROOKS, attack these nests. Size obviously weighs an advantage here with "Woodies" being twice as big as Collared Doves.
Two sit at the nest threshold fending off the parents while the other two raid the nest. Then they change over roles.
But today, which prompted this post, I heard a cacophony from just below our raised front door. Several Blackbirds were yelling at something. So I went out to check their nest. Such movement normally encourages Corvids to flee, but nothing happened, despite my presence and their alarms.
As I got nearer, a beautiful blue/grey headed male Kestrel flew out of the Jasmin hedge where the Blackbirds were nesting. A really beautiful sight.
Unfortunately the nest is now empty.
My QUESTION: I have NEVER before witnessed this. Is it normal, unusual or perhaps a trend for easy meals?
