| | | Re: Great Spotted Woodpecker, nesting in a fence post?! I can confirm that the GS woodpecker IS indeed nesting in the fencepost
I went back there yesterday, armed with binoculars.. &Sat by the road.. and waited.. Then, out of the whole, flew a DS woodpecker!
Then, she (I'm assuming it was the female) sat on a tree branch nearby, calling very loudly.. so, fearing she was kicking off about me, I moved further back (I'd been sat about 20ft away) to across the other side of the road..
From here, I watched as the male (I assume) regularly brought back various foods for the babies, and even saw at least 2 chicks pop their head up to the hole!
Has anyone any idea how long it takes GS woodpecker chicks to fledge? I'm going back there again on friday, hopefully to get some pictures |

| | Re: Great Spotted Woodpecker, nesting in a fence post?! Just be very carefull Pete as these birds spook easily and will not be keen to feed the young if they know you are close. You will need at least a 200mm lens and then some in most cases. looking forward to seeing your pictures. Wizzo
P.s Look out for the same pair next year, as they will use this nest again if not disturbed!

I'm just going to take my basic camera - I don't have access to much else.. If nothing else, I want to get a picture of where they're nesting - given that it's only about 4ft off the ground and only about 10ft from a road, I figure it must be quite unusual
ps. I had e-mailed the council to let them know about it, just incase they were planning to remove the old fenceposts any time soon! I just recieved a reply telling me that they were already aware of the GS woodpeckers, and they've been nesting there for FOUR years! So the fenceposts are staying | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
