Help! What is this bird?

Hi there! A friend and I saw an usual bird last month with a very distinctive call and are having trouble identifying it. It was large, broad winged, black and white and flying low up and down a field. It would soar high, then plummet towards the ground and fly off low across the field again. Neither one of us has much knowledge of this sort of thing so any help would be gratefully received.
