| | | Re: blackbird Fledglings another sad day today.. i was out at the greenhouse tending the seedlings, heard a young birds chirp.. peeked over the fence into our neighbours garden and guess what i saw.. a blackbird fledgling.. was over the moon
later that day it manged to clear the fence and came into our garden, watched it from my living room window, took some photos.. later on i hear the parents going crazy at the fence.. looked out the bedroom window, the fledgling had gone into the other neighbours garden..and thier dalmation dog killed it but not before playing with it for a little while..
sigh.. first the little one gets killed by a car.. now this one got slaughtered by a dog.. not having a good time for fleglings over here right now |

Pipa, what to say...nature decided so it is, and yet there are quite a few blackbirds around..hence even though the poor little fellow is lost the species seems to be doing reasonably well.. |

Mother Nature can seem like a harsh parent at times- I do hate to see the young ones suffer, too.

i guess some areas do better than others, they seem to have bad luck this year in my area, but i must say last year we were very honoured with a nesting pair who raised 4 babys to adulthood from the same nest, and mom and dad even visited us every day with their babys about 2 foot away from us, |

| | | Re: blackbird Fledglings Pipa - I'm sorry you've had such an upsetting time with your blackbird fledglings, and know just how you feel. I'm the same with young birds and rabbits in the garden.
We've been really lucky with our baby blackbirds this year and at the moment have 10 of them being fed in the garden, and with the 10 adult birds you can imagine the bedlam - each pair seem to have 2 young.
I thought the adults would be very particular about just feeding their own young, but when I threw a bit of bread out an adult started to collect it and was mobbed by 6 of the young ones who he fed in turn.
Hopefully your blackbirds will have more chicks this year. |

I'm pleased to hear they are doing well in some areas, i have a soft spot for blackbirds | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
