| | | Out fishing today Ok, I know that anglers and the rspb are at odds on loads of stuff. The reason why really does escape me, but, as an angler I and a good mate were out for just 3 hours in lowland Derbyshire, river Dove to be exact. Nothing remarkable from our point of view but we saw in no particular order:
Mute Swan, Cormorant, mallard, GC grebe, Little grebe, several other unknown "ducks". Waterhen, Grey Heron, Snipe.
Pheasant, engish and french partridge, rook, carrion crow, magpie, kestrel, buzzard, jay, green woodpecker.
Kingfisher, cuckoo, great tit, blue tit, chaffinch, bullfinch and of course blackbirds, sparrows, starlings etc etc
We have seen many other speices down there but today was a bonanza, especially the cuckoo, plus we caught a few fish |

| | | Re: Out fishing today got me into wildlife too - i remember dragging my dad out on freezing winter mornings to go and sit by a lake for hours on end, we always had a great time. At one lake we used to get chaffinches and robins coming to eat our bait and i remember seeing a treecreeper on several occasions.
last summer i had a rather unsuccessful day on the trent, only caught a couple of fish in about 5 hours - but had a great time. saw a couple of kingfishers on numerous occasions and there was a common sandpiper on the far bank for most of the day. its great what you can see if you are just sat in one spot for a long time.
i must get the rods out again soon.

| | | Re: Out fishing today the way to teach kids about nature is TRY and sit em down by water with a rod or a net.it all happens there, give interest and it lasts for life.the life cycle of many species starts right here.patience is a virtue, some have it,some learn it,some keep it,some even come home with a trout and eat it,nature, you have to be there and observe it |

But you forgot to add that without the anglers the rivers would be unpoliced open sewers unfit for man or beast, or bird for that matter.
Just consider the finance that anglers put into their sport compared to twitchers and you'll get some idea of my point of view rather just adopting an ignorant stereotypical view.
Your views are the problem not the solution. Nature is there for all to enjoy, we happen to pay heavily and actually add value.
