| | | Goldfinches are back! I heard a goldfinch early this morning, and a cock bird has been singing his head off for about two hours this afternoon on the aerial. They must use up tremendous amount of energy. They did this last year for quite a while.

| | | Re: Goldfinches are back! It is a great sound. I often find several singing close together. This morning on my walk there was a group of at least 8 feeding on the ground, investigating some adjacent Leyllandii for nesting + a couple singing on wires.
Also 2 or 3 near my garden. A really delightful bird to have around. |

| | | Re: Goldfinches are back! I have a little group of around half a dozen that come nearly every day even through the winter, although I realise they may not necessarily be the same ones. Mine seem to prefer sunflower hearts, although they do eat niger as well.
I have also noticed a couple of youngsters feeding on their own without any noticable attention from any of the adult birds. I noticed this last year as well, and it seems they become independent quite quickly.
Love also how they seem to sit impassively munching away as the starlings squabble and squark all around them. |

We've not had any at all- I've kept my niger seed feeder primed and ready, but no luck- they must be avoiding north London this year.
I'm still hoping, (just hope I don't have to wait 30 years like you did, Pipa! )
