| | | Wild About Britain?? Though this may apply to other categories, I feel it most appropriate with regard to birds: ..........
This forum contains a terrific collection of quality images depicting the vast wealth of wildlife we have in the British Isles - with something to suit everybody from the youngest novice to the most experienced. From the tiniest insects to our biggest birds. The beauty of this site is that (almost) all of these images are of British wildlife. And this is what makes the site what it is.
Yesterday however I noted a collection of images of birds taken in Egypt. No doubting the quality of John's photographs, but the mods, by approving John's request to upload them, as they were on the British list, I feel, made a mistake.
What makes this forum special to me is that it depicts British wildlife. It shows to us all aspects of wildlife that we may not otherwise be aware of. It's only my opinion of course, but I feel that the golden rule, above all others is that any image submitted should be that of a wild subject taken in Britain! Simply being on a British list should not qualify. The sister forum caters for everywhere else outside UK. So - let's keep it simple - and keep this site for British wildlife - wild subjects - taken in Britain!
I invite the feelings and opinions of others.

| | | Re: Wild About Britain?? It's a bit of a funny one for me this. I'm pretty much in agreement too and it is the 'Britain' element that makes me such a devotee of WAB, but then again, the flip side is, I've enjoyed looking at John's photos!

| | | Re: Wild About Britain?? I can see your point but I feel that Wild About Britain has a flexibility that other sites may lack. I like it this way.

| | | Re: Wild About Britain?? I'm with you all the way on that Bill,i think it important to let people know that British wildlife is there for all to see, youngsters especially may become disillusioned if they think only way to see our rare wildlife is a expensive holiday, great pictures by the way, wrong site.

| | | Re: Wild About Britain?? On the other hand, there are birds which are on the British List, but are very rare, so any photos of such birds in Britain might be few and far between. Hoopoes and Bee Eaters for example, turn up here most years, but probably don't lend themselves to the same quality of photographic experience as John enjoyed in Egypt. And as a resource should this site just show distant or poor photos of birds that rarely frequent these shores or should it instead include a small number of good photos of these rare birds, with an acknowledgement of the fact that they are a rare British bird, but that such photos were taken abroad? I hope that the latter might be a happy solution that continues to inform and encourage bird watchers and photographers alike. |

| | | Re: Wild About Britain?? I assume that these species are allowed because they do grace these shores occasionally. I'm fairly sure that there are other similar shots in the Gallery. The species I saw did fit with my understanding of what might turn up here.
My personal enjoyment of WAB is not centred around the Gallery and I have far less interest in photography than many other aspects of natural history. The Gallery input is moderated and I trust the decisions made.
Of more concern for me are the forum contributions made by those members that I do not feel are posting in the "true spirit", whether this be spam, maliciousness or unintentional disruption of agreed subject matter (off topic posts and even whole threads that are not in the "right" place). I now have no problem with reporting content that I don't agree with, whilst understanding that I won't always get it right. My aim is to point out what a Mod may have missed, just in case.
Since the Gallery editors have to approve photos, I really think that concerns should be addressed directly to someone in admin. This would surely be a more direct route for voicing concern.
Just my opinion.

| | | Re: Wild About Britain?? I agree with Deb, the mods moderate the Gallery and they feel the pics are acceptable then why question that.. |

| | | Re: Wild About Britain?? Well, I commented on John's photos....twice!
I was so busy appreciating them & thinking how fantastic they were, that nothing else would have mattered, even if I'd even thought about it!
And it still doesn't, as far as I'm concerned.
