| | | New Forest - Which Birds Might I See ? Hi folks . I'm off on Monday for a trip down to the New Forest. I arrive in Southampton on Tuesday morning, and will be met by the people I will be staying with on Tuesday/Wednesday. They stay in a village called Fawley. Wednesday night and Thursday, I will be staying with a lady who lives just outside Brockenhurst. While I am there, I will be shown around parts of the New Forest, and I will also be trying to fit in a visit to some people near Lyndhurst.
During my stay, I will no doubt be looking out for birds and wildlife , and just wondered what I might expect to see. I don't have a car, but will try to fit in a couple of walks around the places I will be staying.
This trip came about due to very sad circumstances. 6 weeks ago my beautiful pony lost her foal, then had to be PTS herself. I am going down to buy a new pony and have made a short break out of it. I'm excited about going, but it will be a bit emotional for me, so I'm hoping to get out for a couple of walks to help take my mind off things.
I will have my camera with me, so hoping to get some interesting photos.
Thanks in advance for any tips |

If by chance you do get to read this then its well worth going just up the road from Fawley to Ashlet creek, maybe not the prettiest of areas but fantastic for nightingales, I heard three or four there on friday in the scrubland between the pub and the big Fawley chimney. Look out for peregrines there too.
Also just down the road is blackfield common and kings copse wood, well worth popping down there for nightjars in the evening. Exbury nearby is a lovely place to visit too.
Somewhere like Denny wood a bit closer to lyndhurst is good for redstarts, lesser spotted woodpeckers and hawfinches. You can usually spot hobbys on the heathland there too.
Would be great to know what you did and saw | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
