What kind of Fish has this Heron caught?

I was down my local river today and was lucky enough to see atleast a Dozen Grey Heron feeding, they were catching these fish, but have no idea what they are, Trout, salmon.. any fish experts out there? took these pictures of the feasting...

how close to the estuary were you because they look more cod family than salmonid to me,

possible young whiting/pollock from the shape.


though this could just be an effect from the picture

small trout and salmon are pretty much torpedo shaped,

that looks to me like it has a more flattened head profile with a distinct latteral line showing

if i could see the fangs i might have even said small zander but i can't see the gill plates either

then again i'm only commenting from 36 years as an angler so i'm no fish expert either

I would agree they look like trout or salmon.

Looks like a smelt to me..

Look very much like young Rainbow trout,i would think stocked in for fishing but more likely escaped from a trout farm, is there one nearby ?what is the name and location of the river.

I agree. That second pic looks spot on for a Rainbow Trout.

Behind the gills looks a bit speckled to me and its being squashed so the shape is hard to work out.
