Saw this at Stodmarsh today and I know that Aeshna had greenshank there yesterday so that's what I looked up first. But there are a couple of things about it that don't quite fit. Firstly the mottling continues down onto the belly all the way to the legs. My books show the greenshank with a white, un-mottled belly. Then he's got a dark ring under his eye leading to a little darker triangle behind it. It probably is a greenshank but I'd be grateful for an expert opinion. Sorry I don't have a better photo...

Yes  there were at least 7 of them there yesterday with 3 Wood Sandpipers. |

No wood sandpipers today (at least not that I saw) but there were three or four snipe lurking in the long grass.
