| | | ID help please First of all I must apologise for the quality of the photo's, the light was not very good and the bird kept moving out of shot....how rude! It is hard to make out but it's worth a shot! I saw the same bird yesterday, but didn't have my camera with me. Could it be a hen harrier? any help greatly appreciated! |

| | | Re: ID help please Short-eared Owl, I reckon, from wing and body shape, wing markings and head shape and colouration. Lovely bird - one of my favourites. |

| | | Re: ID help please Looks the right colouring for a Montagues Harrier. Have a look at this: YouTube - Montagu's Harrier,Croft Pascoe, The Lizard Peninsula,Cornwall.17/04/2011
which was posted on the Cornwall birding website last week. If this is what you saw might help you confirm it.
As far as I know, Hen Harriers are similar in flight, but darker - more speckled brown in colour, although the quality of your shots does make it difficult to see the colour.
I agree with above, that head shape looks very owl like though.

The wings are far too broad for any Harrier species.

| | | Re: ID help please Brilliant! thanks folks! I had a quick look at a clip of a short eared owl and at one point it tucked its wings in and dived, which is exactly what the bird did yesterday when I saw it! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
