Bird of Prey Identification Please :)

I recently spotted a pair of large birds flying quite close to the ground that I believe to be birds of prey but I am not sure on the style.

I am from Kendal in Cumbria and was a really warm day.

They were about the size of buzzards with feather 'fingers' on the end of the wings. They seemed to be dark in colour, slightly greyish I think, but with white tips on the wings and a light patch on the belly and lower wing.

I used to be quite educated with UK birds but have lost touch slightly in identifying them and these 2 birds have puzzled me. Sorry for the vague description but hope you can help

Chances are they were Buzzards which can be very variable.
