Went for a bike ride today, through the Goss Moor SSSI, and heard a very distinctive bird call. It sounded just like a nightjar (I have heard one in the "flesh" before), but I always thought they only called at night. The habitat was right for an NJ - heathland, but if it wasn't one, then is there another daytime calling bird with a similar song? |

Nightjars are 'crepuscular', they call from early evening to full darkness.
I have certainly heard them call in daylight, but this is not at all common.

Yes a very similar call is that of the grasshopper warbler.I would say this is far more likely as they are arriving in numbers at the moment. |

It's a bit early in the season yet for nightjars as well.
