It's only an immature eagle and assuming it is a trained bird, it's incredibly reckless of the owner to put it into such a dangerous confrontation.

| | | Re: Golden Eagle Vs 2 Capercaillie That looks like a very nasty and blatantly cruel set-up to me using a tame Eagle. I hope it wasn't in the UK!

FIIIIIIGHT!!!!
It would have been fascinating behaviour if only it wasn't a set up, As bad as setting up dogfighting. These people should be tracked down & punished. I didn't have a problem with that Mongolian family using an eagle on the fox, although I did feel sorry for the fox, but that was survival.
Poor birds (all of them!) thought the eagle maybe was a bit in danger, capers have an aggressive reputation, would think twice before confronting such an ornery bird.

Poor birds (all of them!) thought the eagle maybe was a bit in danger, capers have an aggressive reputation, would think twice before confronting such an ornery bird. | This video has been discussed on bird forums for several years. As far as I can remember a Norwegian cameraman was filming a lekk when the young eagle flew in and attacked one of the capers. The 'cars' in the background appear to be gulls. The original (much better) video can be seen here: NRK Nett-TV - hastighetsmåling
Not sure why everyone thinks this is staged - personally, I have no idea, but doubt it is. That eagle isn't wearing jesses - I wouldn't like to be the person attempting to pick up a golden eagle that had just done battle with two capers if the bird was wearing jesses. To attempt to do so if the bird weren't wearing them would be suicidal!
Cheers

I assume that the person filming was in a hide and went un-noticed by both the Capercaillies and the eagle - as Jonathan says, there is no sign of any jesses or anything else that would point to the eagle being a captive bird (and I agree that it is a white bird, such as a gull, that passes in the background). |

| | | Re: Golden Eagle Vs 2 Capercaillie Oh good, I hope it is real. I once got caught out by a film of an eagle & a goat which I thought was natural behaviour but was told on here it was set up. Got really annoyed that people think that setting things on other things is fun.
My last point still stands then but now I think that eagle was a bit barmy for taking on two capercaillies!
Mind you I'm rubbish at distinguishing real from staged & am always taken in by stuff, so I hope it was real & as such is really interesting behaviour, the eagle does look quite offended as it's being attacked.
Good find Fudgey
