As I've mentioned before, I believe there's a lot of mythology built up around 'iconic' birds, like birds of prey. I think it's to do with the 'macho' image some owners want to display - eg 'I own and handle a bird that can bring down and disembowel a horse with its talons.'!
Give me a baseball bat and send an eagle to me, and see who wins!

Jim | No, that few self respecting falconers would send an eagle with no jessies into such a situation on purpose because it would be so hard to get it the eagle back (not that it would be physically impossible).

Jim | Just immature Jim, the incident with the calvicle and Jaw was a falconry related accident at a centre it was a female handler that was injured. The only thugs round are the baseball bat type Eagles have strong feet and span the size of a mans hand the talons similar size to a Grizzle bear. Those that handle eagles know, and respect their strenght in their passion for flying or indeed breeding. Accidents though perhaps rare do happen. No one suggested that eagles would attack people or be trained to attack people.

Colin

| | | Re: Golden Eagle Vs 2 Capercaillie This is a Quote about the Harpy Eagle which is considered the most powerful.
(Quote) This is often called the most powerful eagle in the world, weighing up to 9 kgs and measuring 105 cms long. Its talons are longer than a bear’s claws, and it has such a powerful grasp, that it could break a man’s arm or even pierce through his skull if it wanted to. Fortunately, Harpy eagles have never been known to attack humans (unless protecting their nest). In some parts of its range (southern Mexico, Central and South America), Harpy eagles have been said to snatch small children, but this has never been confirmed. They feed mostly on monkeys, sloths, and large birds such as macaws. Iguanas and boas are also taken on occasion. (unquote)
Regards
Colin

Anyway, it doesn't need much thought to bring out some questions. So would it break a man's arm with just a mighty squeeze from one claw, effectively crushing the bone? I somehow don't think it would take the easier option by grasping the arm in each claw and bending it over a branch! Also it could probably bench-press 100Kg "if it wanted to"! Quote: |

| Again, no evidence - pure hearsay. How small would "small" be anyway?
