| | | Re: Probably a daft question They dont breed on their wintering grounds. For example if a swallow comes here breeds through the summer it wont breed in Africa. |

| | | Re: Probably a daft question Much the same as our winter visitors don't breed here but will have bred before they fly to our shores for the winter and will breed "back home" after they have left us in Spring - usually in somewhere to the north/north-east of the UK which would be inhospitable to them in the winter months. [Geese, Bewick's and Whooper swans, Waxwings, Fieldfares and Redwings for example, although one or two pairs of Fieldfare do breed some yeras in places like Shetland]
Our summer migrants breed here then fly off to warmer climes for winter, (very sensible if you ask me! ) Presumably as many are insect-eaters there would be insufficient food for them during our winter months.

| | | Re: Probably a daft question I think Quail can have two generations in a year - migrate from Africa to southern Europe, breed there, then some can move on north to breed in the UK (not sure whether this would be the original migrants or their offspring that come here - probably the latter). |
