| | | Wood Pigeon that thought it was a Duck! I watched in amazment today the pond in Grosvenor park Chester as Mallard gave themselves a good wash in the middle of the deep pond, and a wood Pigeon landed on the pond and joined in it acted exactly the same way, washing itself but watched in horror as it slowly got waterlogged and drowned in a good six foot of water, first time I have witnessed that before..as anybody else seen that happen?
I also have pictures.. |

| | | Re: Wood Pigeon that thought it was a Duck! A few pigeons tried to do the same thing, so they must watch the behaviour of other birds... here is one of the pictures i took, remember this is deep water... |

| | | Re: Wood Pigeon that thought it was a Duck! I have a couple of times seen a pigeon land in deep water splash about and then leave safely. It did seem like a risky strategy to me though...

Then they introduced a second paddle in a different colour and they had to learn to peck the red one a certain number of times and the green one a certain (different) number of times. Then they introduced a light which when it came on they had to stop counting and start again when it went out at where they left off counting when the light came on etc.....It was quite fascinating really. I know some teenagers that might struggle to learn this!! ha ha
I sometimes wonder if those flimsy nests actually are a balance of effort verses return, seeing as they breed all year around maybe it doesn't matter if they lose a few eggs or youngsters now and then especially if it only takes a day or two to build a new nest.
Also a couple of years ago I did a lot of sitting and watching for bird survey and sometimes people would turn up to shoot pigeons but I swear as soon as the pigeons saw the shooters little white van the levels of activity by pigeons in the area was suppressed and I never once saw them factually land with the plastic decoys on the ground. I wish I'd properly recorded the amount of activity with and without the presence of shooter really.
