Sparrow Breeding Behaviour

Hey Guys,

Have a flock of House Sparrows that have been visiting the garden every day since October. They pretty much rule the garden as there is 30+. My question is what happens when it comes to the breeding? Do they all just pair up and go their separate ways? Mix with another flock? Are all these birds in the garden flock even related? I guess I never really thought about it before and I am quite interested.

I think they all pair up, however they generally nest and feed colonially throughout the breeding season, so many of these paired up birds will never be that far apart from each other.

Then, these birds will gather together next winter to form new flocks.

I don't think they travel very far. Many never travel more than a few hundred meters from where they hatched, I believe.
