| | | mallard in my pond. Has anyone else ever had a mallard duck land in there garden pond ( if you have one of course).
It happened to me the other day , the dog was outside enjoying the sun , when i heard a splash... i looked round the door and see some ripples , and then to my amazement there she was ...the dog stood there lookin , ears pricked upright, then he barked scaring the duck off..

| | | Re: mallard in my pond. Get a pair on my pond about once a year. I think they must be checking it out, and go back to their mates, saying "No, it's still not the place I'd care to raise MY kids"

Its very enclosed but only 20 yards from the canal so I think they misjudged their landing

| | | Re: mallard in my pond. we had a pair come regularly to our pond until we had to do a grandchildren proof cover and then they couldn't access it but for the last two years we've had a pair of water hens visit, they come to feed on seed put out for the ground feeders then manage to get under the edge of the cover have a swim then poddle off to the nearby drain.

| | | Re: mallard in my pond. My parents have a large circular pond, about 25 feet in diameter, which they put in about 10 years ago. For the past 5 years they've had about a dozen mallards at any one time, some of whom have successfully raised a brood. They've laid eggs all over their garden, in fact, including under a bush by the front door.
My pond is only a couple of feet long, so not a big attraction to ducks.

| | | Re: mallard in my pond. actionfinch
I was out yesterday and two of them arrived almost on top of me in classic fighter pilot style out of the sun so I didnt see them until the very last second, just before splashdown in the nearby river.
I managed to get one shot off, into the sun but you get the idea |

| | | Re: mallard in my pond. Sister once had a swan in their back garden, think it'd misjudged landing or ran out of puff, as the reservoir was on the other side! Trouble was, it then couldn't take off as her garden is surrounded by a high wall, hedge & conifers so it flapped around in a panic. She had to open her double gates so it could get enough runway.
She couldn't get over just how huge they are.
