| | | Short Eared Owls on the Isle of Sheppey Just to report that at least two short eared owls are still on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
Usually one or both have been seen hunting the long grass marsh/meadow to the West of the Raptor Viewing point on the Harty Ferry Road. Mid to late afternoon onwards seems to be the best chance. But not until almost sunset tonight, and then the one that arrived flew straight along the meadow and off elsewhere. Only returning later, and well after sunset with another to start hunting there.
I'll be going there most decent weather afternoons that I can make it until they leave. |

I got all excited hopig to see a good variety, we got there before sunrise and left after sunset, and saw 2 Merlin, a Kestrel, and some Marsh Harriers. The weather was soooo naff!!!
Will go there again in the winter though, I can see it's potential

If you saw 2 Merlin, then I'd call that a pretty good result, but certainly possible to get 6 or even 7 spp of raptor + owls. |

| | | Re: Short Eared Owls on the Isle of Sheppey The Short Eared Owl didn't start hunting until sunset again today.
I spent an hour there this morning and from around 2pm for 4 hours this afternoon.
Little Egret, Heron and a lot of activity from the Marsh Harriers all afternoon. Including the sight of a male and female Marsh Harrier "sky dancing" together for a while. Looked wonderful. Got a photo but was too far away for it to be much good.
By the way, The "field" used by the short eared owl is actually more North than West from the raptor point.

Just funny that I got myself hyped up for seeing lots of raptors/owls and only saw 3 species That's birding! |

Nice to have passed the time with you

Regards Jeremy | Lovely to have had someone informative to chat to. And yes. It was nice to wait and see that wonderful bird again. Just hope it stays around until the next sunny day!
Cheers,
Bryan

They know our diet is wide and varied, (Spag Bol being a favourite ), and they know it doesn't include owls.
But even if the short eared does head North very soon, there is still a Barn Owl fluttering around that location from time to time later in the day.
