| | | Re: Short Eared Owls on the Isle of Sheppey At least one still on Sheppey. Usually hunts the field to the North of the Capel Fleet Raptor viewing point from about 4 pm onwards. Hunting a bit far from the road at present, (along the far dyke bank as seen from the road), so photography is not easy.
Often joined by the local barn owl after about 5.30. As it was tonight.

| | | Re: Short Eared Owls on the Isle of Sheppey What a surprise tonight. Was having a very quiet day at home, so decided to go to Capel Fleet for the late afternoon. Just to see some Marsh Harriers as I thought the Short Eared Owl had long gone North.
But no! Sat on the footbridge over the dyke, facing to where I hoped a Marsh Harrier would come from, but for just a moment looked behind me. And there was the Owl, hunting his patch.
Had my camo hood and gloves on, but was in the wrong place for the Owl. So when he went down on a kill for a few minutes I hurried back along the footpath and lay down in front of a large bush. Still not totally right for the sun, but the best I could do quickly. Then up he went and headed almost straight for me. Saw me at the last minute and veered away.
May have got a couple of more reasonable shots, and this one needs a little bit more work. But I need my Tea now.

| | | Re: Short Eared Owls on the Isle of Sheppey Yes, they are wonderful birds. It was great watching it hunting this evening.
Those other two photos below. I'm reasonably happy with them, but I still have a way to go to get the ones I'm really after.

| | | Re: Short Eared Owls on the Isle of Sheppey Despite dull weather I spent a couple of hours at Capel Fleet last night. The Short Eared Owl made an early appearance, (ten to six), but headed off along a ditch away from his normal hunting field!
I didn't stay until dusk as a heavy shower arrived.

| | | Re: Short Eared Owls on the Isle of Sheppey Not been to Capel Fleet for Short Eared Owls for a month now as I have assumed they have all left by now. Been to other parts of North and East Kent chasing Kingfishers, (no success), Hobbys, (lots of success), etc!
But read on the KOS web site that one has been seen at Hartey today! Between 08.00 and 08.05 this morning along the Harty Road. From the arrow on the map it looks like it was close to the end of the road down by the Swale. i.e almost opposite the other end of the road that ends at the Swale at the Oare Marsh Reserve.
Is it possible a Short Eared Owl, (or two really), might spend the summer and breed on Sheppey?
May try and get across there tomorrow if I feel better. Not been at all well today. Slept most of the afternoon.
