| | | Categorising groups of birds Ill probably make a mess of explaining this, but here goes. I was just looking at my flikr account and my albums have got into a bit of a mess. I have a lot of different sets, for example "Thrush and Blackbird family" "Finches" "Woodland & garden Birds" "Water Birds" "Game Birds" and things like that and basically I am all over the place right now. If I am putting say a Chaffinch into one of my sets Id put it in "Finches" This seems ok, but when I want to search I sometimes look in the wrong set for it, for example I would look in Garden and Woodland birds by mistake. Seems obvious I should look in Finches first, but I have so many sets I can easily miss or forget I have that one. Any way what I am looking for if any one can help is a list of birds and the categories they fall in to. One that is probably the most commonly used. I hope some one can help and I hope I make sense here. Thanks for now, Alan. |

| | | Re: Categorising groups of birds The problem is that you're mixing up two different systems. I think I'm right in saying that birds are most usually categorised either: taxonomically, i.e. according to what family they're in (e.g. "thrushes and chats"); according to the habitat they live in (e.g. "woodland and garden"); or according to what they eat (e.g."insectivores"). There are other systems as well. You need to decide which system you want to use, and stick with that consistently.

| | | Re: Categorising groups of birds Its always best to group them by family or it will get complicated. For example what habitat would you put blackbird in garden? woodland? farmland? |

They've colour-coded them for the different families, so you could sort yours to family order, as others have now already said
