Mine is my favourite - Great Spotted Woodpecker on my birdfeeder. Click on the link to my webcam where you might see one live and if not you can see photographs and videos.

Re: Bird of the day!

My bird of today is a kestrel, female I think. She has been hunting over our field all week and today she took a break on some overhead cables. Managed a pic but I was a bit too far away

My bird(s) of today were 3 buzzards circling around high above the garden, super sight.

Re: Bird of the day!

Bird of the day is one that is not native to this country. For the last 6 months or so there have been sitings of this bird and it has been seen taking Rabbits with ease.
This morning-in thick fog- I was walking through the local country park when I happened to look at one of the old oaks-couldnt believe it,even through the murk I knew at once I was looking at a Harris hawk.Managed to get some photos too!

I hope his owner gets him back pronto!

We had a medium-sized flock of long tailed tits turn up this morning. They were all over the picnic table and our small 'kitchen bay' which is very close to the porch. They didn't move until my Mum was quite close to them - cheeky blighters!

I would like to say all the birds that visited my garden today but the highlight this last week and today has been the return of the Coal Tit!

Thanks Pam, although having someone hold the wildlife still for you is kind of cheating really!

Re: Bird of the day!

Today I've had a beautiful male Redstart in the garden for the afternoon. He's not quite in full breeding plumage but very colourful nonetheless. It's the first time I've seen one in the garden and it's certainly brightened up a dull, windy day.

Thumbs up Re: Bird of the day!

My bird of the day was a Mute Swan that i had to rescue from a busy road near my office. But i was a bit miffed at the couldn't care less drivers who just wouldn't let me cross with it once i had picked it up.

That's one heck of a garden bird Guy. I'm a tad envious.

Lovely photo My bird of the day is a heron which I spotted on the roof of a neighbour's house. I was alerted to it when I heard some seagulls making a horrendous din at 6.15 this morning! The seagulls really did not like the heron being there, I wonder why? sorry there's no photo of it

There was a great spotted woodpecker in the garden - the first one for my new place and brings my garden species list up to 20 now

Around London it's not uncommon to see c100 Goldfinches in Aug/Sep as the family groups join together to feed on thistle + other seeds. The sound + sight of these birds certainly deserve the collective noun of a charm!

Re: Bird of the day!

My Bird of the Day was a Kingfisher, which I spotted flying along the Grand Union Canal at Cow Roast (between Tring and Berkhamsted, Herts.).

It was the first one I've seen for a couple of years or more. It was a very dark and grey morning, so I didn't pick up the bird's bright colours at first. I then saw it was red (darker than the orangey-red usually seems), then twigged what it was, but only then detected the blue as it went by. Often I've just seen them as a bright blue blur as they've gone by.

Further on I watched a Cormorant fishing in the canal - it was more successful than the anglers I passed!
