My bird of the day was this Siskin, the first time I think I've seen one in the garden. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My birds of the day were a group of Mallards (hybrids with blue bills) that swam around a pond in a row. No matter what happended they kept paddling about in a single line. Even if they were interrupted by swans, geese or other ducks they reformed and continued on their journey.
I could see the point if the first duck in the line was a female but as far as I could they where all males. To me it looked like a pointless exercise but maybe there was some purpose behind it for them.
The photograph was taken at Cannop Ponds, Forest of Dean Monday 11th February.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! I have two birds of the day - goldcrests and treecreepers - seen in my garden.
There were at least three goldcrests, twittering and flitting around the firs, often coming down to the lower branches, giving me a very good view of them.
Whilst watching the goldcrests, I spotted a treecreeper in a fir. Another joined it and they flew up towards the treetops rather agitatedly chattering and flying round each other - so I assume they were fighting. One returned to the garden and spent some time on a willow.
Managed a few not very good photos of one of the treecreepers. I've borrowed a friend's 70-300mm lens; unfortunately it's extremely soft (but the poor results with it have given me a kick towards purchasing something an awful lot better!). I wish the one of it plummeting had come out sharper... |

| | Re: Bird of the day! my birds of the day, i saw these birds today down at the local reserve
SIDDICK PONDS in workington, a DIPPER as i walked to the reserve by the river, at the reserve i was extremely fortunate to see a bittern which i watched for a good 15 mins, the ice had pushed it to the edge of the reeds,
also i watched a kestrel mobbing a barn owl, plus plenty of goosanders,
pochard and tufted ducks and 1 little grebe. what a good day |

Not a great photo, but this Red Kite was definitely my Bird of the Day as I spotted it from the back garden. I've been waiting for a couple of years for Red Kites to reach this part of the Chilterns. I've seen them nearby occasionally (closest sighting was a mile or so away at Whipsnade), but this was the first time I've seen one in my home village. It's a wildlife ambition achieved, and I'm dead chuffed! | |
