| | | Re: Bird of the day! Having braved the cold to go to the local shop, I spent sometime indoors watching the birds in the garden and trying to snap them through the window. Some turned out better than others, especially as I had not removed the 1.4 converter and was slightly over-gunned. I too saw a coal tit, which ws an exciting first in our garden. Unfortunately, I could not to the camera quickly enough. However, one I did take is this blackbird. I know we should anthropomorphise, but it looks to me exactly as if he is complaining about his cold feet and treading very gingerly as a result. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My birds of the day was when a small flock of gulls were circling above our house calling and clearly arguing over some scrap of food. The sun was warm and if you closed your eyes it felt like the seaside. Couldn't tell what they were, probably first winter black headed around here.

I went to Blackwater Arboretum and while walking around a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker came and hopped up a tree near me, and then, after waiting around for a while, I had good looks at Hawfinches as they came in and landed on the pine trees. I've got to thank Deerstalker again for the recommendation, it really is a great place.
Also at Blackwater were some colourful Bullfinches, Bramblings, Siskins, Marsh Tits, Goldcrests and Treecreepers. Earlier in the day I had been to Pennington Marshes where the highlight was the huge flock of Golden Plovers that kept flying around!
I'm really pleased, two new birds, and really nice ones as well!

What a fab day green with envy | So am I. I have seen hawfinches already this year but I never tire of seeing them but Lesser Peckers, now that's a different story, and as you say, both birds on the same day (and with such a quality supporting cast to).
What a cracker of a day Guy.

Glad you saw them this time Guy. The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker seems to be hanging around there at the mo.
Did a conservation task in the New Forest to day. With the bad weather all I saw were Crossbills & Siskins. |

The light was so bad I couldn't get a shot. We had all three species in the garden during last year, we are so lucky. Can anybody tell me if they return to the same nest site year after year, as we have seen them on a regular basis. There is also a family of Starlings in a broken branch of the same tree.
