Julie | These guys are getting really common around london these days. Only c5 years ago there weren't that many sites that held them, now they seem to be on many lakes, though not generally in big numbers. |

Forgive the quality but the best I could get taken thru patio windows.

A garden singer - very cold but at least it was dry here.
He is spending most of his time chasing the dunnocks off. |

(I think that's what it's called! )
Although it's pretty common in my garden, I just like it!

Barbara | What a fabulous bird to have in your garden. I've had Goldcrests a few times, but never a Firecrest- maybe one day? |

The conifer trees are what they are interested in but saying that I had a goldcrest in my apple tree 2 weeks ago. I first spotted this Firecrest about 4 weeks ago but I've not been out much since due to the weather, got a fantastic suprise when he surfaced again. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Well it's a toss up between Firecrest, L.E Owl and Lesser spotted Woodpecker today and I'm not sure which one to class as best of the day.
I suppose the Firecrest because if its sheer beauty but I rarely get to see Long-eared Owls. Up until today (when I actually saw three of them) I have only seen one other since January 2004.
Then there is the L S Woodpecker which is also a really hard bird to see.
I better invent a new name to cover the three as I can't split. How about the Lesser Fireowl.
I have some extremely bad shots of the Owls taken in very bad light under a tree canopy. I had to use ISO1600 to get 1/30th so you can understand why I haven't posted the images.

Barbara | Wow! what a good spot Barbara! I go to two sites that are supposed to get Firecrests, I've never seen any sign of them. To get one in your Garden is just amazing! |

Barbara | I can only repeat what Graham said Barbara. A superb bird to visit your garden, and you managed to photograph it too! Very well done.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Thanks John, Graham and Matt, I still can't believe how lucky I am to have all this at my back door. It is always a great feeling to see a new species in the garden. The reason I went out in the garden today was that a I saw a male Brambling by the feeders it was raining and very dull, I have that Brambling to thank for making me want to go out even though it flew away when I walked up the garden can't rememebr if I have had a Brambling here before or not |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My BOTD is again one of our daily visitors. We have 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers that visit us every day, (male and female), and 1 male Green Woodpecker that bounces in occasionally.
This photo below was taken a few minutes ago, and shows the female (trust me, there's no red at the rear of her crown / top of the nape).
Unfortunately it was taken from distance, through double glazing. But its no too bad, considering that...
We have set up a suetty, nutty, mealwormy 8' post in the garden, 8 weeks ago (I'm sure I mentioned it on WAB), which our male GSW discovered briefly 2 days ago - only to be frightened off by a (very rare indeed) car, trundling up the service road behind us. Bad timing !
I'm off to buy one of those cheapy camo tents from a well known high street store today, with a view of getting some really nice, (close up) photographs and even (with luck) a video or two of our head-banging friends.
All they've got to do is pluck up the courage to re-discover a veritable feast for them, in our garden...

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day is the little nuthatch!
I saw my first one ever today in the garden at work, such a pretty little thing!
In fact, I only popped out for a smoke and in the time it took me I saw robins, blackbirds, wren, nuthatch, blue tits, wood pigeons, great tit, what I think was a fieldfare and a red kite taking off from next-door's roof. Not bad for 4 minute eh?!

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Two Egrets flying over my house and a Gold Crest for me today. I have noticed him/her bobbing around in the conifers a lot lately - would they normally nest in conifers?
Also, Mr and Mrs Jackdaw are 'loitering with intent' around our chimney again. I hope they get settled before Dad gets a chance to cap the chimney, as I rather enjoy hearing the babies shuffling about while I'm watching telly .

Surely it's much too early for that sort of thing?
