| | | Re: Bird of the day! Today and yesterday, in almost the same place, a barn owl. Yesterday it was perched on a fence post by the side of the road and lazily flapped off as my car drew level; today it was flying along above the grass verge and gave me a great view of it in flight. Unfortunately, on both occasions I was driving to work and unable to stop. Too gloomy for photography, anyway. |

| | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day is a siskin, after a very eventful week with long tailed tits, chaffinches, I desperately scanned my garden for any brave birds venturing out in this awful weather and there he was eating like food was going out of fashion. I have never had a siskin in my garden before so he brought some sunshine to an otherwise gloomy day. Fi. X X X X

Plus, I mentioned how a bit of patience and hard work pays off in another thread well the one thing that used to upset me was the lack of the dawn chorus how I used to remember it when I was a child, well I was rewarded this morning (I think 06.30 ) by a blackbird and a robin singing thier hearts out to wake me up in my sycamore tree, so they are my birds of the day. X X X X | I've been longing to see siskins back in my garden for the last two years and earlier this week I finally saw a flash of yellow in the sycamore at the bottom of the garden. Rushed for my binoculars to get a better view and....it was a large yellow leaf Boo hoo |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Shame, it's the first time I have seen a siskin and I did a little dance. I've also had another first a greenfinch, the sunlight hit itr just as it was coming down to feed, beautiful. This has all happened since I changed the feed and it's only cheapy (pardon the pun) seed from Morrisons and they all seem to love it. Fi. X X X X

| | | Re: Bird of the day! This afternoon, I was out in the garden experimenting with a new camera, taking shots of birds on the feeders, when this Pied Wagtail landed below the feeders. Quite ordinary I suppose, but as they are only an infrequent visitor to the garden it's my Bird Of The Day. |

My highlight were 6 Goosander at Sandwell (4 male, 2 female). A new one for me. |

I think Goosander's are lovely birds, I still remember my excitement when I first saw one, a drake on a reservoir near Ipswich. I've certainly never seen 6 in one place - not seen many more than that in total, come to think of it! |

Unfortunately the bird was in excess off 100+ feet away from me so getting a good image with my 100-400 lens was a non starter but I have added the best two of a bad lot of images.

Were you shooting in RAW? If so I'd be tempted to tweak the colour balance to warm it up a little as I'm seeing a slight blue cast on the white patches on his wings. Mind you my monitor is not callibrated so it might just be me. Either way it's still a fabulous shot - thanks for posting it!

BTW, Badgerwatcher, see you got the buckles undone OK | Hi
I am getting goldfinches on my feeders in the back garden here in Reading, & I'm getting six at a time, they seem to like the sunflower hearts the bestof all.

Dave P. | Thanks for the comments all.
Dave...no I was shooting in jpeg and yes, there is a slight blue cast. This is something I will have to work on in future.
I must say that this bird was an ideal subject...he knew I was there and was almost posing for pictures

My BOTD is this rather regal looking Grey Heron, watching the water levels rise and rise, and become muddier and muddier, in its favourite fishing mill stream, near my office...
