And thank you, Nightshade.
With reference to your G&T, I've now got an olive tree in my sun room, which is putting out masses of buds, and just bought a lemon tree which is looking very happy next to the olive. So now I need a juniper.......

| | | Re: Bird of the day! We went to Cheddar Reservoire this morning and saw some Great Crested Grebe . The first time I saw these birds was in Germany and hadn't seen any since until today so it was a treat . Sorry the photo is a bit iffey, they were just floating out of my reach as I was trying desperately to focus! Haha.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! > we would have had some excellent shots of the Tawnies.
I have pictures of very same birds taken in the last few days. Not up to digiscope standards with my amateur camera, but reasonable. Have just joined and can't submit pictures, so they are at http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~hancock/tawnyowl1.jpg http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~hancock/tawnyowl2.jpg
On Sunday, while taking the picture of the adult, I met a couple who had come all the way from Newcastle simply to see and photograph these owls. They had brought a rug and a picnic, and were making a day of it. |

You can use an inline image link by typing
[ img]http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~hancock/tawnyowl1.jpg[ /img]
Remove the spaces between the first brackets and the letters img and /img to make it work like below. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Definitely not a Buzzard Beryl- that's an Accipiter! Goshawk is Buzzard sized, but photo looks more like a Sparrowhawk to me-probably a large female- difficult to gauge size on these pictures, but shape looks better for latter species. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! this site (below) has a few Buzzard pictures.
You can also back track and find Sparrowhawks.
Buzzards leading edge wing tips are usually seen protruding in front of the birds head.
Sparrowhawks have a different shape.
It is really all down to experience with birds in flight, something that you just have to get out and do for yourself, and not really any short cuts.
Hope it helps a little BW? BirdGuides Picture Page
