I also went to College Lake (this afternoon though), but no little ringed plovers for me
However, my bird of the day has to be a juvenile cuckoo which I saw there. I heard other cuckoos around but only saw the one.

Chiltern Ben | I heard a cuckoo too while I was there this morning, but didn't see one. However I did get probably my best ever view of a cuckoo there a few years ago. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! I heard and then saw a Turtle Dove at Totternhoe quarry, South Beds., this afternoon. It's a known site for them, I've heard them but not seen them there before. It was the first definite Turtle Dove sighting I've had since 2003. |

Saw my first ever Red Kites today from the train between Reading and Earley stations, I saw one on the way to Reading and to make it even better, 4 on the way back just gliding around and quite low so i got a good view, shame I was travelling and couldnt stay to watch them for a while.

| | Re: Bird of the day! Hi,
Today it has to be a red kite I saw from a garden in Bledlow Ridge in the Chilterns. Although it was overcast, I managed to get this shot (having "borrowed" my Dad's camera!! )

| | | Re: Bird of the day! We went to Ruislip Woods/Lido today + high on thermals we saw Buzzard, Sparrowhawk + Hobby within minutes of each other.
On the lake 3 Common Terns gave much pleasure + many house Martins were collecting mud from the shore. I was amazed to see c15 juvenile Pied Wagtails on a small raft with no adults + also 2 Grey Wagtails too. Later I did see 1 adult Pied.
Great-spotted Woodpeckers seem to have had a good breeding season as birds were calling everywhere; also 2 family groups of Nuthatch were watched. |
