| | | Re: Bird of the day! Aerial dogfights in a clear blue sky:
A soaring buzzard came over, and one of our resident crows laboriously circled up and up untill it was high enough to go in close and give the buzzard some grief, making it bank and even go upside down at one point. Then another buzzard came to join the melee, making the crow a bit less sure of itself.
Off sailed the buzzards, ad next thing there was a deep "crrrraaaakk" and the crow and ts partner were mobbing a raven!
All from the comfort of my back garden deck chair

| | | Re: Bird of the day! A cracking Grey Wagtail singing on top of Ealing Broadway Station this morning. People often associate this species with unspoilt upland streams but it can also be a very successful species in the most urban of environments. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Went to RSPB Dungeness today, hoping for a glimpse of the purple herons (no luck), and when I got there it was locked! I've never had that at any other RSPB site. I wonder if they've had some bother - vandalism or scrambling bikes or something like that.
Anyway, I went for a wander over the other side of the road and got some good views of oystercatchers...

| | | Re: Bird of the day! This morning was far too hot to carry on gardening so I decided to go to a car boot instead. The car boot I go to is 15 miles away and it was then I realised that it was in the same direction I would go if I went after the Great Reed Warbler at Ilkeston.
It was such a nice day for a drive so after the car boot I did go to Ilkeston in the hope of getting relatively close to the bird as by all reports it had been showing well.
Arriving at the site I could hear it well before I got near it, which is not surprising as these are really loud birds. Unfortunately it was staying well hidden, only popping up briefly every now & again.
It was about 100 yards away and at last it stayed up for about thirty seconds giving me the chance to fire off 4 shots before it shot back into the reeds.
It stayed like that for nearly an hour so I decided that in this heat enough was enough and decided it was best to go home.
