| | | Re: Bird of the day! I was doing the first of my BBS surveys this morning + my transect takes me through an urban park with 2 small waterbodies. One with 2 islands is probably only 3 metres wide, but quite long. Usually only Mallard, Moorhens + Heron early in the season, but often Tufted Ducks on the later visit + once a pair of Mandarins. Today also a pair of Canada Geese, but surprised to see a Cormorant sitting there today.
They are often seen flying over + on any sizeable lake, but this was like having one in a large garden pond. The Crows teased it a bit, but seemed content stretching it's wings, swimming + behaving normally. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Crow. I do not know why he/she can no longer fly. It visited a fair bit last summer and now to see how it's survived the cold winter foraging on the ground and without becoming victim to foxes and winter temperatures is remarkable & pleasing to know upon it's return!

Pallid Swift .... a first in the UK for me at Kessingland, Suffolk yesterday.
Alpine Swift .... my second UK record but a first for my Essex list at the Essex Wildlife Trust reserve in Chafford Hundred near Grays this afternoon.
Richard | Brilliant. Seen pallid before, but not had an alpine yet.
