| | | Re: Bird of the day! I was out in the garden today, looking on a shed's asphalt roof for insects sunning in what was there of all 14' of it - and suddenly a bird came into view about 50ft ahead, above the road out the front. I believe it was a Kestral, and hovering fairly hap-hazardley at that - flapping around from left to right, not exactly stable I thought... and then it took off |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! first looks been good for me this mrning.
staggered from bed had the usual first look at the feeders from the back bedroom window to see 3 colared doves cleaning up some of the dropped seeds and leftovers from the back table.
then half an hour later opened the kichen curtains to 3 jackdaws on the front feeders.
i've seen the doves sat i the trees inspecting before but not actually eating anything. |

Most of the birds had gone to bed but there were streams of Redwings coming in to roost, a huge roost of Wood Pigeons, Robins making their "quiet" alarm call from hiding places in the undergrowth, some redpolls and a very busy flock of Long-tailed Tits.
By the time I got home the Tawny Owls were calling.
Nice experience on a calm, clear afternoon after all our terrible wind and rain

I remember a day (over 30 years ago) at a lagoon in Tolon, Southern Greece where we had a real heron-fest
We sw grey, purple, night, squacco, cattle egret, little egret , glossy ibis and ....(still I guess the rarest thing I ever saw) a SACRED IBIS which in those days was exceptionally rare further west than the eastern black sea and is now no longer even listed as a vagrant in most European bird books
That's a good memory
