| | | Re: Bird of the day! Today i took a friend to the Cheshunt/Fishers Green area of the Lea Valley as she hadn't been there before + a good place for birding around London.
Many good birds including 3 Water Rails- 1 feeding in the open between 2 reedbeds on a dead fish, until another chased it off. Good numbers of Siskins with 2 males feeding at eyelevel about 2 metres away.
A couple of Little Egrets flying over, a Buzzard being mobbed by a Crow, but the ducks were looking at their best- Wigeon, Shoveler, Gadwall, Teal,etc- but the pick of the bunch an exquisite drake Smew with his mate diving for food + later 5 Goosander with 2 immaculate drakes trying to woo + impress the girls- fabulous sight! |

I had a lovely day and clocked up 34 identified species. The thrushes and chats were the stars today. I spent the morning at Sevenoaks Wildlife reserve and got these three:
Robin...
Blackbird...
And the star of the morning, song thrush...
In the afternoon I nipped over to Elmley Marshes where it was quite heavily overcast unfortunately, but I did get quite a nice male stonechat on a fence post next to the hide...

I'm pretty sure that the first photo is a different bird to the next two as there were several about and I was photographing a robin in-between (which I would only have done if the thrush had flown off. Nothing against robins but I have quite a few pics of them now but don't often see thrushes.)
Incidentally my tally for the day has just gone up to 35 as there are white-fronted geese mixed in with the greylags here...

| | | Re: Bird of the day! BOTD is a little owl.
Noticed a magpie behaving oddly, flying in and out of an oak tree, could just make out an odd lump amongst the branches.Pointed camera in the general direction, full zoomed and took some shots. The results were'nt very good but enough to see this little chap!!
The magpie harassed it some more till the owl had enough and flew into a hole in the tree!!
