| | | Re: Bird of the day! I took a trip out to Elmley Marshes today and just as I was approaching the first hide after the long trek out from the car park, a short-eared owl took off from the bank on my left and flew a semi-circle in front of me before disappearing over the sea wall. I watched it go then turned and took approximately one step towards the hide when two more took off from the same spot and flew to join the first one. Once more I turned towards the hide and blow me down a fourth one lifted off! This one didn't follow the first three but disappeared over the bank back towards the car park.
Unfortunately I have no photos as there was a blizzard going on at the time and my camera was safely tucked up in my backpack. Even without pics, definitely my bird of the day.

Beautiful bird, one I'd love to see become a regular breeder in the UK.. |

ellen | Funny you should say that ellen. If it wasn't for the owls they would have been my bird of the day and for the same reason. There were quite a few at Elmley and I was hearing their plaintive calls all day. I managed a few pics but have already binned them as they were either blurred or the birds were too distant. Lovely to hear them though and it really added to the mood created by the weather.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Just fished this out of the recycle bin as the least horrible of my curlew shots from today. At least a couple of birds in this flock are in focus...
I had one shot with 27 birds in - all of them blurred!

Dave P. | I've seen them at Elmey at that exact same spot Dave - along the bank the runs along the left past the first hide. Must be a good spot for them! |
