Plenty more were to follow! It's rare you actually get what you set out for, and so quickly. |
That's brilliant Graham and what a cracking shot. Yes I can imagine how good it feels to be able to photograph what you set out to try and capture. The odd time before I go out into my hide I think it would be nice to see a new bird visiting and on the odd times it does it makes my day.
Thankyou Guy a few of the birds visiting my garden are rung. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Beautiful photo Beryl a lovely pose.I beat my 4 buzzards I saw yesterdy at Bowling Green Marsh today I saw 6 near the white bridge on the River Otter.Again to high for a shot.I then carried on walking along the Otter from Budleigh to Otterton and on the way I spotted a Kingfisher. It flew up from the river into the trees. So quick but a fantastic bright blue flash.Five minutes later it flew up the river almost skimming the water.I kept an eye on the river all along the walk, nearly stepped in cow pats on the way through not looking where i put my feet.Of course I was hoping to see it somewhere along the way sitting on a branch long enough for a photo but no such luck.Stopped at Otter Mill for a cuppa then made my way back to Budleigh again hoping to see it.Well I did skimming along up river past me like a rocket.Oh well one day I might get a photo So this was my bird of the day.The Beautiful fast Kingfisher

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of today is a Wren. Saw one this morning, and although there is nothing rare or unusual about them, it always gives me great pleasure to get a good view of these beautiful little birds. I loved seeing the Wren shot posted on this thread by Graham a few days ago!
In Bulgaria, where I spend a lot of my time guiding nature groups, the common name for a Wren is "Orehche" which literally translates as "Little Walnut"! A perfect description I always think! |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My first ever bird of the day is actually a bird of yesterday, as that's when I saw it and it's a red kite.
I don't know if birds can look depressed but the kite was perched on a high voltage line (first time I've see that) in the pouring rain with a mini-waterfall dripping from its tail. It looked thoroughly wet and miserable with two crows sitting on the line about 3 metres away . I could almost hear it say, "what have I done to deserve this". Hopefully it's dried out now and is giving its attendant mob a run for their money. |

Well my bird of the day was a wren in my garden.I had just sat outside near the feeders after giving the fridge a good clear out and he was on a branch right beside me.Had the camera at the ready but as soon as I put it to my eye of it went Still I suspected I had spotted one before but wasn't sure as it was amongst the foliage but this time it was on a bare branch.I just wasn't quick enough. Will be keeping a sharp lookout form this day onwards in hope of a piccy

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day is Tawny Owl. In the heart of London's Kensington Gardens alive with joggers, dog walkers + tourists was one adult Tawny looking quite rufous in the sun up a Horse Chestnut + his partner in the tree behind with 3 fully fledged young sat huddled together on a higher branch, all out in the sun- what a glorious sight. At the same time a Sparrowhawk soared overhead whilst several pairs of Stock Doves in nearby trees were engaging in courtship displays as the Ring-necked Parakeets squawked away.
In total 52 species of bird were recorded- other highlights being a male Peregrine over the Serpentine, singing Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Goldcrest + Treecreeper, activity from Green + Great-spotted Woodpeckers + a good selection of waterbirds. But those Tawny Owls- they were the stars today! |

You'll have to get a camera mate.
I have had an excellent three days around Suffolk, Norfolk and Beds but I will be doing a thread all about it.

Thursday's bird of the day has to be the Purple Sandpiper I photographed at Ness Point, Lowestoft. I have never got a decent shot of one digiscoping but using the DSLR system really does help you get that shot.
Yesterdays bird of the day was a toss up between a Red-breasted Goose I captured at Snettisham or the Green-winged Teal at Titchwell, or the Waxwings at Holkham. I may post images from all three as I can't decide.
Todays bird of the day is no contest. A beautiful Red-rumped Swallow in Bedfordshire.
I haven't had chance to upload any images just yet as I am still busy editing the loads of photos I have taken but as soon as I have done that I will add the photos to this thread.

John | Sounds like a good few days John. Though I've seen plenty of Red-rumped Swallows abroad, I've only seen one in England, even though several turn up most years- great bird to see. Did you get that before Barn Swallow on your year list? |
