I never tire of seeing the variety of Tits that abound in this area - Great, Coal, Blue, Willow, Marsh and Long-tailed are to be regularly seen.

[quote=glsammy;240819]Nice shot Tich. I'm a big fan of long-tailed tits, one of the cutest birds around.
My bird of the day though was this Reed Bunting, or I should say a group of 4 Reed Buntings. I haven't seen any for ages, since last summer so they were a nice surprise today at Carsington waters. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! I was up at the crack of dawn this morning, walking round my local nature reserve in the hope of seeing short eared owls. I didn't, but I did see a lovely Stonechat which flew from one reed to another in a 10 meter circle around me. He seemed very interested in what I was up to. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Sand martin today, even though I didn't see one!
Spent the day at Crossness Nature Reserve making modifications to the sand martin wall. It was built 5 or 6 years ago but has never been used and the thinking is that this is because the holes were too big and too empty. So today we packed them all full of soft sand so the birds can dig their own tunnels and we also made smaller openings on most of them. There is now a choice of 40mm, 60mm or three holes that are still the original 100mm. If we're lucky enough to have any birds use them (they've been seen on the reserve but haven't nested) then we'll watch to see which hole size seems most popular and make them all that size.
The irony is that if we are successful in getting them to nest I won't be able to take any pictures as they are a schedule 1 species and I don't have a licence.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Hi my bird of the day goes to the humble starling. I have spent about an hour laughing my head off at them, they're hilarious and the strong wind is making them funnier you can see them trying to land and the wind carries them just past thier mark the indignance in thier face just histerical. Think I need to get out. X X X X
