| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day was as I looked out of bedroom curtains this morning looking at the frogs in the pond when I noticed a male Blackcap having a good bath at the edge, only the 4th time I've seen 1 in the garden, though they do breed locally.
Runners up was the fine pair of Bullfinch in the country park at the top of the road where I occasionally see them. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day is the Ring-necked Duck that has been a long stayer at Foxcote Reservoir, near Buckingham.
Unfortunately it took me over two hours to locate it, as it was hidden behind the waterside vegetation. Eventually it did show but even then it still was behind reeds.
I had to borrow a scope as mine has gone back to Swarovski again for repair. As good as this replacement scope is it can't handle bad light situations such as we have had today so the resulting digiscoped image is very poor (and taken through thick reeds) but at least you can see that it is a Drake Ring-necked Duck.
I was pleased with myself yesterday. I went to look at the Draycote Reservoir Gull roost just after 15:00. I was very surprised to find that no other birders were there so it was a bit daunting looking through thousands upon thousands of gulls spread over this huge reservoir. I was looking for Glaucous & Iceland Gulls. I couldn't locate an Iceland Gull but I did find two juvenile Glaucous Gulls. They had to be yesterdays birds of the day. No photo though as they were much too far away in bad light to get them.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day for yesterday was a male Sparrowhawk that landed on a garage roof while we were visiting relatives.
Went up the Forest first thing this morning & my birds of the day are Kingfisher, Hawfinch & Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day is this beautiful male Hen Harrier that flew right past the hide at Middlebere today.
There was also a female around, although she didn't come as close, and I saw my first Water Pipit there as well.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My birds of the day were a solitary swan flying over the house calling probably for a mate
A noisy (are they ever quiet ?) pair of oystercatchers also flew over the house
Also very long tailed long tailed tits came to visit the willow tree to-day |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Well after being inspired by the enthusiasim on my 'what is this thread' from yesterday I spent twenty minutes with the camera in the garden this afternoon and saw a woodpecker Chuffed to bits. Also saw bullfinch again but my bird of the day is the woodpecker. The pic is heavily cropped. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Bullfinch and Great Spotted Woodpecker in your garden, you're doing very well bigwavedave! I'm sure a lot of people will be very envious. I get the woodpecker in the garden here, but we only see a bullfinch in the garden maybe once a year. |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Can I have two today please?
The first is this brent goose - first for me!
The second is a flock of turnstones. I've never managed to get within a hundred yards of these before and they're so well camouflaged it's usually proved virtually impossible to spot them in the photos afterwards. But today they were quite happy for me to get within 10-15 yards. They are beautiful little birds with bags of personality...

| | | Re: Bird of the day! On Thursday I was in Bristol, where I saw a Cormorant with a predominantly white head and a white tail, then on Saturday a pair of Robins started building a nest in the conifer right outside our back door (the dunnocks will not be please, as that is normally their house! ).
Oh yes, and I still have one pair of Collared Doves.
