I do like the pose! A very nice capture even with poor light.

Re: Bird of the day!

My BOTD is again one of our daily visitors. We have 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers that visit us every day, (male and female), and 1 male Green Woodpecker that bounces in occasionally.

This photo below was taken a few minutes ago, and shows the female (trust me, there's no red at the rear of her crown / top of the nape).
Unfortunately it was taken from distance, through double glazing. But its no too bad, considering that...

We have set up a suetty, nutty, mealwormy 8' post in the garden, 8 weeks ago (I'm sure I mentioned it on WAB), which our male GSW discovered briefly 2 days ago - only to be frightened off by a (very rare indeed) car, trundling up the service road behind us. Bad timing!

I'm off to buy one of those cheapy camo tents from a well known high street store today, with a view of getting some really nice, (close up) photographs and even (with luck) a video or two of our head-banging friends.

All they've got to do is pluck up the courage to re-discover a veritable feast for them, in our garden...

Doug

Re: Bird of the day!

My bird of the day is the little nuthatch!
I saw my first one ever today in the garden at work, such a pretty little thing!
In fact, I only popped out for a smoke and in the time it took me I saw robins, blackbirds, wren, nuthatch, blue tits, wood pigeons, great tit, what I think was a fieldfare and a red kite taking off from next-door's roof. Not bad for 4 minute eh?!

Re: Bird of the day!

Two Egrets flying over my house and a Gold Crest for me today. I have noticed him/her bobbing around in the conifers a lot lately - would they normally nest in conifers?

Also, Mr and Mrs Jackdaw are 'loitering with intent' around our chimney again. I hope they get settled before Dad gets a chance to cap the chimney, as I rather enjoy hearing the babies shuffling about while I'm watching telly .

Re: Bird of the day!

my bird of the day is the greenfinch, for ages this bird has been singing a very distinctive cry and I have never seen the bird. Today 2 of them came to my feeding station and sang so now I know I am happy. Fi. X X X X

Re: Bird of the day!

My Bird of the day just wouldn't play ball............

So pre-baited moss covered stump set-up for Brambling which didn't go on the stump either.....but whilst waiting my bird of the day made several appearances and wouldn't go on the stump either......

So had to make do with a feeder shot which i don't like but thats all i could get of a MARSH TIT my Bird of the Day !!!!!

Re: Bird of the day!

Sparrowhawk. Nothing unusual really, BUT it was building a nest!
Surely it's much too early for that sort of thing?

Re: Bird of the day!

I'm going to pick stonechat again!

Spent the morning doing volunteer work at Crossness Nature Reserve (reedbed maintenance) and a pair of stonechats were in constant attendance, supervising the work and making sure we did it properly. I didn't take my camera with me as a rake was more useful. Although I have a few nice shots of stonechat already I haven't got any taken at Crossness so I'm planning to go back tomorrow morning. Which pretty much guarantees two things: 1. It will be raining and 2. The birds won't be there!

Dave P.

P.s. nearly forgot to mention, I'm pretty sure it was Magpie Mick that walked past just as we were finishing up (about 1:30ish) - Hi Mick!
