| | | Re: Bird of the day! We've just come back from a week spent Christmas shopping,in North Devon.
We had an apartment, about 15 feet from the sea,at Ilfracombe. It was getting dark, when we first arrived, but not too dark to see a seal, about 20 yards away!
In the morning,I noticed something small,on the balcony.It was a rock pipit,first one I'd seen,this year!
There were always cormorants,shags,oystercatchers,rock doves,gulls,but on Tuesday,I noticed a small wader,on a large rock,having a mung through some weed.It was there for ages,until a herring gull decided it had to go!it was a purple sandpiper,a first,for me!
On thursday,we went to Lynmouth, where we saw dippers.
There was an enormous flock of lapwings, near Chivenor, which we saw, most days,as well as curlews an other waders.
Shame we spent so much time, shopping, could have spent the whole week, birdwatching, bobbo |

My bird of the day is the sparrowhawk.
I took the dog out at dusk and saw the s-hawk was sitting in a tree, I got quite close then it flew off the next thing I heard this very loud screaching I thought oh he has got his supper and it was the sound of a bird being killed, then the next thing the s-hawk flew in front of me and it was him/her screaching, it was very loud, I didn't know they could screech so loud.
It was a lovely sight and sound |

| | | Re: Bird of the day! Just been down to see the juvenile White-tailed Eagle near Quarley in Hampshire. It was circling around when I got there, and then it perched on top of a Yew tree for about half an hour before doing two more laps of the hillside and then dropping back down into the trees and out of sight. Huge beast. There were a couple of Buzzards up at the same time and size ratio it was like comparing Sparrowhawks next to a Buzzard.
Also present were a Peregrine that was playing with the crows and at least 2 Ravens.
Cheers,

| | Re: Bird of the day! smartie-when you get one goldfinch, then you will often eventually get loads. I started of with one or two a couple of winters ago and within about a month was counting upto 30-40 birds at one time! |

Spent a few hours out today, and was casually wandering around recceing my local patch. Thought I seen an otter, but turned out to be a Dipper, didn't manage to get a photo though (but there's always next time).

If bird of the day was a competition, you would have just won it, hands down (for me, anyway).

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My bird of the day has to be this Robin. Not only did it let me get a close up shot, it also gave me a short song. Not the full blown song you often hear but just a few short notes.

| | | Re: Bird of the day! My birds of the day for today were new for my garden, a small flock of Lapwings that flew over this morning.
Also at Pennington Marshes some beautiful Pintail, as well as Shoveler, Wigeon, Teal, Black-tailed Godwits, more Lapwings and Golden Plover.
