Robin building two nests

Hi,

I have a pair of robins that frequent my small garden in West London. One is now apparently building two nests, one in my garden in thick ivy about five feet up a fence and the other in similar ivy about 12 feet up in my neighbour's even smaller garden. There's about 20 feet between the two sites.

Is this common behaviour? Will one nest eventually be favoured, or will the female use both?

my experience of Robins in my garden is that they do build more than one nest then set about laying in one and even abandoning that after brooding the eggs for a few days. Only to start again in a completely different part of the garden. Usually successfully hatching this second brood.

Interesting, is if definitely not two birds? The female builds the nests and will often leave one nest and start another leaving the male to raise the first brood alone. Perhaps it is something similar occuring here.
