| | | identifying a moorland bird I am trying to identify a bird we caught a few glimpses of yesterday at Anside Knott in Westmoorland. Unfortunately, we did not have time to take a photograph but there were bright yellow feathers on its back and it appeared to be about the size of a partridge. |

| | | Re: identifying a moorland bird Arnside Knott is a relatively small limestone hill popular with walkers, dogs, recreational pursuiters. It is easily accessible and at the top, there are spectacular 360 views.
This is view from my side of the estuary http://www.visitcumbria.com/tony/arnside-5080707.jpg
The main of it is managed by the NT http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main...dlife_walk.pdf
As you can see there is much broadleaf woodland around the lower elevations and the grassy areas around the top are home to populations of fritillaries, rabbits and ants.
I would doubt that GP breed there and have just tried to ring the NT warden for confirmation but his phone isn't on. It's just not the sort of place I would expect to see a GP but it's close to their estuarine haunts. It can't be ruled out.
By the way, it's a great place for a day out and Arnside is a charming small town. Leighton Moss is just down the road. There's a station for rail travellers within walking distance of The Knott.

| | | Re: identifying a moorland bird Golden plove often frequent moorland, especially as we draw into spring and they start to move back to the uplands. Im not sure of the area as I have never been however if it is moorland then carnt see why not. Even if they do not breed there they will pass through and feed on the open ground. If its heavily wooded then its less likely to be one. |

On the other hand, I sometimes see - or usually hear - green woodpeckers around Leighton Moss, Silverdale, etc. Seems a much more likely bird considering the habitat.
Surely it's a little early for g. plover to be back on the hills, I wouldn't expect to see them for another month or so?
Cheers
