Woodpecker habits
Our greater spotteds pick up dead leaves from the ground, take them up a tree and hammer hells bells out of them. Why? Perhaps insects are sheltering under the leaves? Any knowledge of this, or other ideas? Just fascinating.

Could well be looking for grubs in the galls, especially if they are Oak leaves, which tend to be peppered with galls on occasion.
