| | | Fieldfares and redwings. I live in South Wales and normally at this time of year we are visited by numerous fieldfares, waxwings and redwings who migrate from the north each winter. But in the last five years I hav'nt seen one !!
I know this must be down to global warming as our winters are so mild now but I would be interested to know if anyone has seen any of these birds or a decline in their population.
Please let me what part of the U.K you live in, particularly if you live in Wales as I would like to know if you have noticed a dramatic decline in these winter visitors. |

| | | Re: Fieldfares and redwings. I live in Dorset. Last year I noticed an increase in the number of fieldfares and redwing numbers around my house. This year, there is still a fairly large flock of redwings but I haven't seen any fieldfares. At Arne, the regular winter flock of redwings and fieldfares seems to be the same. They may start arriving if there is a good cold snap in February or March.

| | | Re: Fieldfares and redwings. There was a thread about this recently (though I can't seem to find it at the moment) - I have seen a number of large to very large flocks of fieldfares and redwings in a number of locations this year, so perhaps there's a bit of a being in the right place at the right time thing going on. I guess the folk working the observatories would be the ones to ask |

| | | Re: Fieldfares and redwings. Numbers of both have certainly been on the decline in our bit of rural Cambridgeshire as well. We used to get large mixed flocks of both in the hedgerows around our garden and the adjacent meadow but for the last few years I've seen/heard only smallish groups of Fieldfares and hardly any Redwings. In fact, so far this winter I've seen just one solitary Redwing - it sat at the top of our hedge for a couple of minutes about 3 weeks ago before flying off.

| | | Re: Fieldfares and redwings. Thanks Guy, Dorset is'nt that far from South Wales and you are probably right, if we do get a cold snap and a drop in temperature this winter we might see alot more of these winter visitors. Cheers. Hawkwind.... |
