Floating Crows

I had a great experience today on the banks of the river severn.There was a large spring tide that flooded the grass banks along the high tide line.I caught these crows taking a ride on a floating log which was moving out with the tide which i thought was rather comical.Then i saw a short eared owl quartering the submerged area of grass and gave me good if fairly distant views for 10 minutes .After seeing some voles swimming in the margins it then became obvious that all the voles had been washed out of there homes and were swimming inland from tuft to tuft to stay above the water line.I am sure the voles had a tough time of it because the crows and gulls were calling and circling frantically.To top off a rather odd looking blacked headed gull floated past on the tide,i then realised it was infact a meditteranian gull in summer plumage. Days like this dont come along too often but they sure confirm why watching nature is such a fantastic experience.

A fine afternoon indeed. Crows + gulls are quick to exploit any novel food oppurtunity. Love the Short-eared Owl- a real favourite of mine.
