Massive gull in my field. First it was right over the back on the farmers land and looked to be sharing a dead rabbit or similar with a magpie - I saw it out of my window and actually thought a dog was lost in the field it was that big!
Then it flew off and had a huge wingspan of about 2m or more - what was it?

Probably a Greater Black-backed Gull ( Larus marinus). They can get quite monstrous 
Did it look like this? The RSPB: Great black-backed gull
If it's back was more grey colour it may have been a Lesser Black-backed Gull ( Larus fuscus)

Heh yeah they're pretty big...and mean 
Wingspan average 1.5metres or more, looks bigger when they're close up though!

The Greater black-backed Gull is probably my favourite. Get close enough and you'll see just how big they are!
