| | | Spotted my first ever goldcrest Walking to work through Blythswood Square in Glasgow city centre I always keep an eye out for bird life and throw the core from my morning apple onto the grass for the redwings/blackbirds/thrushes to peck at. This morning I spotted a few usual redwings and blackbirds then this tiny little bird buzzed past me and began working it's way through the sparse bushes. I thought it was a wren at first but as I got closer to my surprise it was a goldcrest. It barely noticed me as it hopped and hovered about the bushes and low trees and I even managed to get close enough to snap a pretty decent decent picture of it with my iphone of all things(I felt quite smug about it too as I hear they are hard to capture). Well the pic looks great and is lit well with the bush it was sitting in nice and clear. Pity the bird is just a little brownish blur as it must have taken off just as I snapped the pic . Oh well it made my morning to see the little guy anyway

They're hard enough to see at best, let alone photograph them! They never stay still long enough
Next stop Firecrest??

| | | Re: Spotted my first ever goldcrest I spotted my first little flock of Goldcrests yesterday at Gelli Hir Woods, Gower. They were feeding on an ivy clad tree. I'd love to say I'd got photographic evidence, but all I have is about twenty shots of the branches were they had been!
I thought they were Wrens at first too, but I knew the calls were wrong. So I sat and persevered and finally spotted the flash of gold. Consulted my field guide and then confirmed the calls on my Birdsong CD.
I'm well chuffed, my bird identification is coming along at last. |

We saw it there several times, so there were lots of photo opportunities. We reckoned it was "fighting" its reflection. |

| | | Re: Spotted my first ever goldcrest Lovely photos Elizabeth B, their permanently 'cross' look is great isn't it?
I walked past one yesterday in the sunshine, I was only about 6 feet away but guess what, I had left the camera in the car. D'oh!

| | | Re: Spotted my first ever goldcrest I saw my first one in the bad snow around Xmas just sitting on my Damson tree quite near beside lots of Redpolls around a Niger feeder. I was just stunned and such a tiny awesome beautiful bird and to be so lucky to get a good long look at it with binoculars close up for my first sighting in my garden (have seen plenty in Mallorca but at a distance always). Then it flew into my Cypress tree next to the Damson tree and I got about three more sightings of it in the Cypress tree since ....... I also believe I saw quite a few of them in a tree I marked in my mind in the woods beside my house here in Ireland. I dream of getting a photo ......... |
