| | | Robins paired - 30 January 2011
Our resident robin usually defends his/her place on the bird feeder with some energy. Yesterday (30 January) I noticed he (or she?) had decided to amicably share this resource! Pairing for Spring time I guess?

Could it be that the left one is the male?

| | | Re: Robins paired - 30 January 2011 I'm led to believe two robins paired up in my garden just last week.
What are you looking for when you sex them Nige?

| | | Re: Robins paired - 30 January 2011 I thought the female had a slightly paler breast and less distinctive markings (although both these factors are hard to distinguish in these pics, after looking at them again I'm not sure which is which!)

| | | Re: Robins paired - 30 January 2011 We've had at least 3 chasing each other around the garden in recent weeks but just last week I noticed that 2 of them seem to have settled down and now tolerate each other, so I'm guessing that we've got an established pairing here too
Last year a pair nested in an ivy-clad pillar only about 6 feet from our patio doors so it will be interesting to see if that nest is used again.

| | | Re: Robins paired - 30 January 2011 Thanks for these replies - it seems that late January must be the time for robins getting together across the UK (I'm up in Fife, Scotland), but I guess most of you knew that anyway!
Our regular visitor the sparrowhawk (female) took something this morning, hopefully not one of these two robins. Almost all of my friends who have bird feeders also have a regular visiting sparrowhawk - would be interesting to know just how widespread this is across the UK?
