| | | Re: Black headed gulls on the change have seen a few of the local wintering Black headed Gull in recent weeks starting to change gradually into spring plumage also saw Snowdrops mid week in a local church yard starting to make an appearance and a Song Thrush in full song.
Also looking forward to spring this year after what seems like a very long and mostly overcast winter and for the better light with which to try and get some decent pics. Hopefully it is just around the corner but we normally get a last blast of snow in mid Feb here. |

| | | Re: Black headed gulls on the change I have to confess that I am still totally puzzled as to why these birds are so named. After all, they NEVER have black heads!!!! Isn`t ornithology wierd at times? Great fun though! |

Great fun though! | I guess seeing as Brown-headed Gull was already taken they had to settle for the next nearest colour |

I still think that this is one of those oddities in our wonderful world of birdwatching though. Especially if you consider it`s latin (or scientific) name - Larus Ridibundus which actually means Laughing Gull! |

Larus melanocephalus should be the black headed gull but in English is the Mediterranean Gull. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
